Ситуация многоязычия в Хеттском царстве, одном из великих царств позднего бронзового века, оставалась естественным социолингвистическим фоном на всем протяжении его существования с XVIII
по XII в. до н. э. Наряду с хеттским в столице империи Хаттусе активно
использовался лувийский язык, причем хеттские документы фактически
позволяют нам зафиксировать хетто-лувийский билингвизм на этой терриории. Также в письменности использовались аккадские и шумерские
идеограммы; аккадский язык выступал в качестве lingua franca для всего
региона Малой Азии того времени. Для раннего периода Хеттской империи актуально также использование хаттского языка, для средне- и особенно новохеттского периода – хурритского.
Анализ текста «Протокол дворцовой стражи» – инструкции для привратников в царском дворце – позволяет нам увидеть ситуацию многоязычия, отраженную в тексте непосредственно в виде указаний, на каком
языке следует говорить в тех или иных случаях, а также в виде указаний
на использование одного из языков в качестве «проверочного» языка.
